In the 52 years since Point of Sale (POS) specialist Allprint Graphics (Sydney) opened its doors, the retail environment has changed dramatically. In today’s highly competitive space, brand owners are looking for creative partners who can come to the table with solutions to help them stand out from the crowd.
Allprint’s Chief Operations Officer Chris Wright says the EngView Рackage Designer Suite, sold and supported by Canon Australia, combined with the Canon ProCut Finishing System, enables the company to deliver a competitive edge to its clients, and at the same time streamline workflow, increasing speed to market.
Prior to Allprint’s decision to use the modular EngView Package Designer CAD software, Wright says its designers were working to “very old school practices involving hand sketching, before converting to Adobe Illustrator, and hand-cutting. We were also outsourcing a percentage of prototype work, which at times impacted our ability to control production schedules". After conducting “due diligence” to assess the options available, Wright settled on Canon's EngVlew/ProCut solution and the company hasn't looked back.
Wright says the EngView software has two standout features - the library of over 1500 ready-to-use parametric design templates and the ability to produce a 3D PDF.
“EngView appealed to us as it came with a large number of design templates. Plus it is fully integrated with Adobe Illustrator, which is essential to our workflow. The template library is a fantastic feature as it allows us to sit down with the client and instantly show them a vast range of design options via an iPad. With the templates we’ve got a starting point, whether it be for a POS design or props for window displays. Once the client’s made a selection it’s a matter of working with our design team to develop the brief to meet the Job’s parameters. This one step alone is a quantum leap from where we were and saves a considerable amount of time. It has energized communication with our customers as they are immediately engaged by having so many options to choose from".
He continues. “Also the ability to produce a 3D PDF is brilliant. Being able to show the client a 3D view of the design, before we move to prototyping, is a great advantage. It allows us to email the virtual prototype to the client who can make amendments before incurring the cost of prototype production. The 3D PDF enables the client to rotate the design in order to view it from all angles. And by pressing the play button feature, the client can see how the design folds flat, or how it disassembles. Not only does this feature save time and money, but it also helps to motivate the client to continue with the project…the 3D PDF gets them excited about the job because they can immediately visualize the finished product”.
Case Study - The Cardboard Suitcase Window Display Prop
The Brief:
To create a cardboard suitcase for a national retail chain’s travel-themed window display.
The Challenge:
Suitcases are bulky to transport. Allprint had to come up with a design that folded flat for transport, but was easy to assemble by in-store staff. This meant no gluing or taping in the assembly. The instruction: keep it as simple as possible.
The Solution:
EngView’s “no glue” template library. Allprint chose a template of a suitcase that fitted within size limitations and stock selections. A handle was added to the suitcase from the EngView accessory library and within 30 minutes the 3D PDF was ready to be emailed to the client.
The Outcome:
With the 3D PDF the client was immediately able to evaluate the design. Within hours the design was approved and Allprint seamlessly moved to the next stage, exporting the knife line from EngView to Adobe Illustrator. The ProCut System was then used to produce the physical prototype.
The Benefits:
Great productivity savings from design stage into production within 24 hours of receiving the brief compared to the previous timeframe of one week; seamless integration into the workflow and; an extremely satisfied customer.
The Conclusion:
“I believe EngView got us the Job,” states Wright “The EngView combined with the ProCut System, which we use to produce the physical prototype, is a great solution. The ProCut is also ideal for short runs up to 400. Depending on the intricacies of the design, you can use it as a production machine quite effectively. As a consequence we’re very pleased with our investment.
